When I need a good comfort meal I always default to this burrata baked ziti. It has been a staple in our house for years and likely will be for the rest of our lives. This dish includes a rich and hearty pasta sauce, ziti noodles, parmesan cheese, topped off with delicious burrata cheese.

what you’ll need:

  • 1 lb Ziti or Rigatoni noodles

  • 2lbs hot italian chicken sausage (or sweet based on preference)

  • 1 small onion

  • Two 28oz cans of crushed tomatoes

  • 1 tbs minced garlic

  • 2 tbs italian seasoning

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp pepper

  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes

  • 1 cup parmesan cheese

  • 2 packages of burrata (four 4oz balls)

  • 1 tbs avocado oil

  • Fresh basil

Instructions:

Start by preheating your oven to 375 degrees.

Heat a large pan to medium high heat add in 1 tbs of avocado oil. Once hot add in your chicken sausage and cook until brown about 5-7 minutes.

While the meat is cooking finely chop up your onion. Once the meat has browned add the onion to the pan and saute for about 3 minutes until they begin to soften. Then add in 1 tbs of minced garlic. Saute again for about 2 minutes until fragrant. Now it’s time to add in the rest of the sauce ingredients. Add in both cans of crushed tomatoes, 2 tbs italian seasoning, 1 tsp of salt, 1/2 tsp pepper, and 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes. Feel free to use more or less based on your desired spice leve. Cover with a lid and simmer for at least 15 minutes to let the flavors come together. The longer the simmer the better the flavor.

While the sauce is simmering cook your pasta according to the package instructions. Make sure not to overcook your pasta as it will cook more in the oven.

Once the sauce is done simmering and the noodles are cooked it’s time to assemble! In a large baking dish add in all the noodles, about half of the sauce, and 1/2 cup parmesan cheese. Mix well. Then add the rest of the sauce on top. Break apart the burrata cheese into pieces and place on top. I used 3 out of the 4 burrata balls and saved one as a fresh topping for the end. Finally add in 1/2 cup more parmesan cheese to the top.

Place in the oven and bake at 375 for 30 minutes until the cheese has fully melted and the top becomes golden brown. I usually like to broil mine for the last minute or two to really get a nice color. Serve immediately with a sprinkle of freshly chopped basil and as much as you’d like of the fresh burrata cheese. Enjoy!
